In Yes Man (Peyton Reed), Jim Carrey plays the character of Carl, a repressed divorcee with no hope in life. When Carl reluctantly attends a self-help seminar with his colleague Nick (John Michael Higgins), Carl becomes the centre of attention for Terrence (Terence Stamp), the seminar's moderator-guru.  

Terrence makes Carl promise to answer "yes!" at every opportunity that presents itself. Carl starts to do it and many incredible things begin to happen to him, including a new romance with Allison (Zooey Deschanel), a woman he meets at a gas station. But how many "yes!" are they enough? Carrey dives into his role as Carl, making Yes Man much more than just a feel-good comedy.

4. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

In retaliation, Olive turns Brandon's bedroom charade into a business plan: she pretends to sleep with boys in exchange for gift cards and other rewards. A modernized adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Easy A seamlessly blends comedy, drama, and that iconic teen movie sentiment.

7. There Will Be Blood (2007)

There Will Be Blood, by Paul Thomas Anderson, is a grim study of Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), a burgeoning California oil mogul in the early 20th century. Daniel is the type of man who would sell his soul to the devil for money, which makes the arrival of Paul Sunday (Paul Dano) even more fortuitous. 

The boy claims that there is oil on his family's property and will tell Daniel where it is, all in exchange for cash. The couple makes a transaction and Daniel travels to Little Boston with his son H.W. (Dillon Freasier) to try and buy the Sunday Ranch to drill.  

What awaits Daniel is a cowardly enemy and the cursed land of his family. Or is Plainview the curse itself? There Will Be Blood is a two-hour descent into a hell of business and faith, with the main performance - that of Day-Lewis - winning an Oscar.

8. The Hateful Eight (2015)

James Franco plays Wiseau, mimicking his strange gestures and speech while his brother Dave plays Wiseau's best friend.

 Greg Sestero (author of the memoir on which the film is based). The meta movies odd setup works perfectly for Franco's performance, and he gets enough supporting talent (Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver) to pull it all together into one very well-crafted film.

10. Rebecca (2020)

In this Netflix adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel, Lily James is Mrs De Winter, the new wife of a widowed aristocrat, Maxime de Winter (Armie Hammer). After the nuptials, Maxime takes Mrs De Winter back to her noble estate in Manderlay, on the English coast.

 The idyllic romance quickly turns into a skein of lies, secrets and haunting memories when the ghost of Maxime's first wife, Rebecca, makes an appearance. Screenwriter and director Ben Wheatley had a tough job on his hands, as the first adaptation of this romantic thriller was brought to celluloid by none other than the master of mystery, Alfred Hitchcock.  

The 2020 version of Wheatley is a respectable tribute to Hitchcock's legendary film, but also a completely new rereading, with powerful performances by the lead actors.
